Correctable violations (also known as "fix-it" tickets) are widespread here in the state of California. If a police officer pulls you over and notices a mechanical failure with your vehicle, they will likely give you another citation for your negligence. After the incident, you will usually be granted a certain amount of days to have the problem repaired, or else the situation will escalate. If you take care of it on time, you won't be subject to the entire citation charge. In all honesty, you don't want to pay more than you have to.
